I will just never follow the masses, I am so surprised that this book received an overwhelming amount of five stars. While the sci fi world created was interesting, and there were some funny moments with the heroine and her computer...this book left me feeling...ugh.There is no real story! This "sophisticated" woman is involved in a silly, bogus challenge on some barbarian planet against a gorgeous warrior--she loses--and basically becomes a sex slave to him. She falls in love with him straight away, rather "in lust", craving sex with him all the time.I could accept the instant physical attraction premise, but these two characters are as flat as a piece of paper. I have no idea why Challan falls so hard for Tedra when from beginning to end, she's nothing but a whining, complaining, silly, immature and uninteresting woman. And though Challan is a gorgeous caveman type, he's just as uninteresting. He doesn't speak much and seems to enjoy goading the "silly little woman around"--because that is the role of women on this alien planet--they're scared, silly little creatures who are dominated by the superior warriors...There was a lot of potential in this story, I would have accepted a lot as well had there been a spark--a true spark of attraction and chemistry between the two lovers. These two never had a regular conversation...there was no romance, nothing sweet or tender that plucked at the heart strings...just a lot of goading and posturing, boasting and vanity...I wasn't at all absorbed in the relationship, I ended up not caring for the two and started flipping through the pages asking myself why so many others think this book deserves a five star rating. This book could have been so much better...instead I wanted to clobber both Tedra and Challan, shake them, have them explain to me why they are attracted to the other and why they were falling in love, based on what??...Maybe those two do deserve each other after all, only they seem to get it and themselves...they don't seem to feel inclined to explain it to me-- the reader....they're two fictional characters, lost in their book, in their world, teasing and peeing each other off, page after page after page--Tedra ever the perpetually insulted, angry shrew and Challan the stoic, monosyllabic warrior with the beefy arms and chest-- enjoying all that make-up sex(which, by the way, is pretty vanilla--so no big thrill there either).
Blech blech blech. The first several pages are just the author flaunting around how many interesting futuristic space gadgets she could think up and describe for literally no reason. This happens frequently. On top of that, the 'warrior' is a nightmare sexist who treats the protagonist like crap but then also never learns from it. He constantly condescends to her despite their growing 'romance'. Half the fun of the "brutal old-fashioned warrior falls for smart, sassy protag" is watching him grow into a sweet guy and realize how cool his lady is while she learns to rough-it/respect other cultures/whatever. They grow together. This is just a jerk bullying a woman who constantly talks about how smart and strong she is, without actually being all that smart or strong.
I was intrigued by the premise of this novel. Previously I had read a couple of this author's historical romances, so I thought I'd check it out. Overall it was well written and well paced, entertaining enough to hold my interest. The story was okay, but in the end there were just too many things that bothered me for me to say I liked it. I'm going to mention those things below, so if you don't want any spoilers, skip this part.**Spoilers Ahead**I have a major issue with the heroine. Her us this lean mean fighting machine, and yet she continually shows very little restraint or control. And the minute she sees this guy, regardless of how he treats her, she just goes up in asexual flames. Really? I guess all this strong independent woman needed was an arrogant domineering male to make her feel like a fragile little woman. Ugh. I hate that. I get that maybe she was tired of always being in charge. I get that his strength and dominance may be attractive to her, but he never even calls her by name. How do you fall for someone like that? And how many times do you say, "I hate him now" or "I'll never forgive what he did" only to buckle because you have no control of your body's sexual responses? The hero amiss his love in the end, but I'm left wondering what love? They vault know each other. They don't seem to actually trust or like each other outside of having sex. How is this love?
I read this book when it first came out (80's, 90's?) and LOVED it. Read it 4 or 5 times. My taste in genres has changed over the years though so I didn't get into it as much this time as I did then. Definitely would have rated it 5/5 back then. This is about a female space pilot who escapes her world and goes looking for assistance on another planet/galaxy and finds a hot barbarian prince who wants to dominate her. It just so happens that his planet mates are distantly related to the barbarians who are trying to take over her world and enslave all the women. Her goal is to convince these primitive people to aid her people/planet. But first, she has to overcome their misogynistic ideations. If fantasy romance is your thing though, go for it! I've been in a nostalgic mood lately so have been revisiting my old favorites. Yeah...I think I'm gonna stop that lol
